Cinemark will not screen The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth, the upcoming sequel to Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood, after declining Netflix’s proposed theatrical release terms. Regal has also decided not to show the film on its Imax screens, leaving AMC as the only major chain listed as carrying it on Imax.
Speaking during Cinemark’s third-quarter earnings call, CEO Sean Gamble said the company evaluates films individually but considers the long-term effects of its booking decisions. He said the proposed release model was not constructive for the broader theatrical ecosystem and did not align with what Cinemark believes serves its theaters best.
The film, starring Brad Pitt as stuntman Cliff Booth, is written by Quentin Tarantino and directed by David Fincher. It is set to open in theaters on Nov. 25 and arrive on Netflix on Dec. 23, giving it a two-week theatrical window before streaming.
Netflix’s Imax release was initially intended for Greta Gerwig’s Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew, which was postponed until February. That film is expected to have a seven-week theatrical window.
Gamble also said Cinemark plans to keep The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping on its Imax screens over Thanksgiving, citing strong advance sales. He predicted that theatrical windows could continue to grow, noting that commitments have included a minimum of 45 days, while many major releases have received windows of more than 60 days.
