Club Kid, Jordan Firstman’s acclaimed film about a club promoter who remains at the party too long, has been submitted by distributor A24 for Golden Globes consideration as a drama. The decision was made in close consultation with Firstman, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The classification places the film in the Globes’ drama categories for picture, actor and actress. It will compete alongside titles including The Odyssey, La Bola Negra, Dune: Part Three, Elsinore, All of a Sudden, Fjord and Possible Love, rather than films submitted in the musical or comedy field, such as Wild Horse Nine, The Invite, The Debut, Artificial, Obsession, Project Hail Mary and Tender Loving Care.

The choice may surprise some observers because of Firstman’s comedy background and comparisons between Club Kid and Big Daddy, the 1999 Adam Sandler comedy. However, the film reportedly becomes more dramatic as it develops. Firstman, who wrote, directed and stars in the project, has cited An Unmarried Woman and Kramer vs. Kramer as major influences, and delivers a notably dramatic performance in a late courtroom scene.

Club Kid premiered worldwide at the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section, where it received a seven-minute standing ovation and triggered a bidding war among distributors. A24 acquired the film for $17 million, described as the festival’s biggest sale. It later screened at Telluride, Toronto, New York and other film festivals, receiving strong reactions, and is scheduled to begin a platform theatrical release on Friday.

The Hollywood Reporter previously reported that Obsession and Artificial had been submitted in the musical or comedy categories.
