Peter Farrelly’s I Play Rocky has been submitted by distributor Amazon/MGM for consideration at the Golden Globes as a musical or comedy rather than a drama, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film follows Sylvester Stallone and the making of the 1976 classic Rocky.
The classification is notable because, although I Play Rocky includes comedic moments, it has not been promoted as a comedy. The original Rocky competed at the Golden Globes in the drama category.
If the Golden Globes organization approves the submission, I Play Rocky will compete in the musical or comedy fields for picture, actor and actress. Its potential picture competitors include Wild Horse Nine, The Invite, The Debut, Artificial, Obsession, Project Hail Mary and Tender Loving Care, instead of films such as The Odyssey, La Bola Negra, Dune: Part Three, Elsinore, Club Kid, All of a Sudden, Fjord and Possible Love.
Anthony Ippolito would be in contention for best actor in a musical or comedy alongside John Malkovich for Wild Horse Nine, Ryan Gosling for Project Hail Mary, Tom Cruise for Digger, Yura Borisov for Artificial, Seth Rogen for The Invite, Alexander Skarsgård for Wicker and Brad Pitt for The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth.
That places Ippolito in a separate field from performers including Andrew Scott, Matt Damon, Robert Pattinson, Timothée Chalamet, Jordan Firstman, Sebastian Stan, John Turturro, Jaafar Jackson and Pedro Pascal, who are expected to compete in the drama category.
The submission follows other recently reported Golden Globes classifications, including Obsession and Artificial as musical or comedy entries and Club Kid as a drama.
