Jack Lowden is refusing to confirm or deny reports that he has tested for the role of James Bond. In an interview with British GQ, the Scottish actor addressed speculation that he is among a small group of contenders for the next film incarnation of Ian Fleming’s spy, alongside Callum Turner and Josh O’Connor.
Lowden also responded to comments from his Slow Horses co-star Gary Oldman, who said in September that the role had been cast and expressed hope that Lowden would get it. A source later told The Hollywood Reporter that the next Bond had not been selected at that time.
“It’s all very flattering,” Lowden said, according to British GQ. He added that being mentioned for the role was nice, particularly because the comments came from Oldman, but said he was not going to contribute to the growing noise around the casting process.
Reports have indicated that screen tests for Amazon MGM Studios’ next James Bond film were expected to take place in London at the end of October. The movie is set to be directed by Denis Villeneuve, with Steven Knight writing the screenplay. Reports have also discussed Jack O’Connell and Jacob Elordi, although sources said neither actor would be testing.
British GQ noted that Nina Gold, who cast Lowden as River Cartwright in the Emmy-nominated Slow Horses, is leading the search for Daniel Craig’s successor. Lowden’s wife, Saoirse Ronan, has also played down the subject, saying in October that they were focused on their everyday life rather than discussing the Bond rumors.
Lowden’s interview was tied to his upcoming role as Mr. Darcy in Netflix’s adaptation of Pride and Prejudice. Discussing the part, he said he enjoys taking roles in which audiences may not immediately imagine him, adding that he is rarely the first choice for most of the characters he has played.
