Jamie Dornan, known for his roles in Belfast, The Tourist, and Fifty Shades of Grey, has officially joined the cast of Kathryn Ferguson's short film Nostalgie as an executive producer. The Northern Irish production, which has already secured an IFTA win and BAFTA nomination, is leveraging Dornan's involvement to bolster its campaign during the upcoming awards season, with aspirations for a spot in the Best Live Action Short Film category at the Oscars.

The darkly comic drama stars Aidan Gillen as Drew Lord Haig, a washed-up 1980s pop star who receives an unexpected invitation to perform at a centenary celebration in Belfast. The narrative explores themes of artistic ownership and the unpredictable dynamic between musicians and their audiences. According to the synopsis, Haig hopes to relive his glory days but discovers that one of his forgotten songs has evolved into an unlikely anthem with a meaning he never intended, raising questions about what happens when a song takes on a life of its own.

The film boasts a high-profile creative team, including original songs and a score by Dan Smith, the frontman of the BRIT Award-winning band Bastille. Cinematography is handled by two-time Oscar nominee Robbie Ryan, recognized for his work on Poor Things and The Favourite. The screenplay was written by Stacey Gregg and adapted from a short story by Belfast author Wendy Erskine. Supporting roles are filled by Michael Smiley, Jessica Reynolds, Seamus O'Hara, and Sean Kearns.

For Dornan, the project represents a chance to champion filmmaking talent from his home city. He described joining the largely Belfast-born team as an "absolute no-brainer," noting that he is always looking for exciting productions filmed back home. Dornan praised Ferguson's ability to capture the raw tribalism within Northern Ireland's complex social and political landscape while telling a deeply human and universal story.

Nostalgie marks Ferguson's first narrative drama short, following her debut feature documentary Nothing Compares about Sinéad O'Connor and her second feature, Bogart: Life Comes in Flashes. The film is produced by Kath Mattock, Marie-Thérèse Mackle, and Marc Robinson, with Globe Originals presenting in association with Hopefield and Film4. Stille Productions and Tara Films serve as the production companies. Ferguson is currently in production on her next project, Matrescence, which has recently received backing from the Sundance Institute.
