Lionsgate and Meta have announced a partnership to bring The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping to Meta’s lightweight VR glasses following its theatrical run. The film has already been converted into 3D by DNEG, the Oscar-winning visual effects and animation studio, ahead of its Nov. 20 theatrical release.
Meta collaborated on the conversion so the film can eventually be viewed on its VR glasses, which are separate from the company’s heavier VR headset. The glasses are expected to become available to consumers in spring 2027.
Director Francis Lawrence said the film was designed to create an immersive experience centered on Haymitch’s perspective. He described the 3D adaptation as an additional creative tool and said he was looking forward to audiences seeing the movie in theaters before experiencing it through Meta’s glasses.
Sunrise on the Reaping is a direct sequel to 2023’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes. Both films are prequels to the original Hunger Games series, which was released between 2012 and 2015. The franchise currently comprises six films.
Lionsgate chief revenue officer Jim Packer called the agreement a first-of-its-kind collaboration as the studio explores new ways for audiences to experience the franchise. Sarah Malkin, head of entertainment at Meta’s Reality Labs, said Lionsgate was a strong partner because of its franchises’ artistic profile and global appeal.
Meta has previously worked with director James Cameron on a 3D film featuring Billie Eilish, Hit Me Hard and Soft: The Tour, which is available to rent or buy on Meta VR devices. The company also has an agreement with Disney to provide 3D films through Disney+.
Based on Suzanne Collins’ book series, The Hunger Games franchise has earned more than $3.3 billion at the global box office across five films. A stage production in London and a theme park attraction in Dubai are also planned.
