Martha Stewart has responded to criticism over a since-deleted Instagram photo showing her in a Halloween costume that appeared to depict a homeless person.

According to the report, the lifestyle personality wore ripped clothing and dirt on her face while holding a clipboard bearing the message, “I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!” The image was reportedly part of an Instagram carousel promoting candles she sells on QVC, accompanied by a caption describing the products as suitable for Halloween.

In a statement to People, Stewart said she was distressed that the costume had offended people. She explained that her intention was to draw attention to homelessness, not to make light of it.

Stewart described homelessness as one of the United States’ most serious ongoing crises and said she has devoted considerable time and effort to supporting charities that address the issue. She added that she remains committed to making a difference.

The photo was quickly deleted, but screenshots circulated on social media and prompted criticism. Some users described the costume as insensitive and argued that homelessness should not be mocked or treated as humorous.

The Hollywood Reporter also contacted Stewart’s representative for comment.
