Michael Mann was hospitalized on Saturday after accidentally shooting himself at The Range LA in Los Angeles, according to a statement from a representative and information from the Los Angeles Police Department. He suffered a superficial injury and was treated before being released.
A representative for the four-time Oscar-nominated filmmaker said the weapon discharged while it was holstered. Police officers responded to the range at around 4 p.m. following a report of shots fired and determined that the incident was accidental. Mann was transported to a local hospital in stable condition.
Sources cited by TMZ said Mann was attempting to holster the firearm during target practice at the sanctioned range when it discharged. The director has reportedly been an experienced target shooter for decades.
Mann is currently in pre-production on Heat 2, which reportedly has Leonardo DiCaprio, Stephen Graham and Christian Bale attached to star. The project follows his 1995 crime drama Heat, starring Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Val Kilmer and Jon Voight.
The filmmaker’s credits include Thief, The Insider, Ali, Collateral, Miami Vice, Public Enemies and Ferrari. His four Academy Award nominations include recognition for The Insider and The Aviator.
