Joel Coen is returning to Netflix with “Jack of Spades,” a gothic mystery that will receive a theatrical release in fall 2027 before streaming on the platform. The project marks Coen’s latest solo directorial feature after 2021’s “The Tragedy of Macbeth,” which was released through A24.

Although Ethan Coen is not co-directing, he co-wrote the screenplay with Joel Coen, novelist and screenwriter Eleanor Catton, and playwright and screenwriter Conor McPherson. The film is based on Frances Frederica Montrésor’s 1901 novel “The Alien: A Story of Middle Age.”

Netflix describes the story as “a sinister gothic mystery filled with intrigue and betrayal set in the atmospheric Scottish Highlands.” The source novel follows Esther Mordaunt, a woman in her thirties whose relationship with Jasper, a traveler with a vivid past and a talent for storytelling, leads into themes of integrity, longing and the risks of a life shaped by distant experiences.

The cast includes Olivier Award winner Patsy Ferran, BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner Josh O’Connor, BAFTA nominee and Golden Globe winner Damian Lewis, and Oscar nominee Lesley Manville.

Coen will also work again with cinematographer Bruno Delbonnel, who received an Oscar nomination for “Inside Llewyn Davis,” and composer Carter Burwell, whose credits include “Fargo” and “The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.” Robert Graf, Frances McDormand, Joel Coen, Steven Rales, Graham Broadbent and Pete Czernin are producing, with Donald MacKinnon serving as executive producer.
