Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping will be released in 3D when it reaches theaters on November 20. The conversion is being developed through a new partnership with Meta, the parent company of Facebook, marking the technology company’s first collaboration with a Hollywood studio on this type of project.
Director Francis Lawrence is working on the adaptation alongside visual-effects company DNEG and its Stereo 3D conversion division. Lionsgate and Meta also plan to collaborate on additional films, although those titles will be announced later.
The film will eventually be available on Meta’s VR glasses, which are scheduled to reach stores in spring 2027. The devices are designed to offer an immersive viewing experience in a lighter form than conventional VR headsets, according to the information provided about the product.
Lawrence said the production team wanted the film to feel visceral and immersive by placing viewers closer to Haymitch’s perspective. He described the 3D version as an additional creative tool and said audiences would first be able to see the film on the big screen before experiencing it through Meta’s glasses.
Lionsgate executive Jim Packer described the agreement as a collaboration intended to explore new ways of experiencing The Hunger Games. Meta’s Sarah Malkin said the film represents the type of premium entertainment the company hopes to bring to its upcoming VR glasses.
Sunrise on the Reaping is the sixth film in The Hunger Games franchise and the second prequel. Joseph Zada plays a teenage Haymitch Abernathy, the District 12 character previously portrayed by Woody Harrelson. The cast also includes McKenna Grace, Ralph Fiennes, Jesse Plemons, Glenn Close, Kieran Culkin, Elle Fanning, Maya Hawke, Whitney Peak, Kelvin Harrison Jr. and Ben Wang.
