Michael Mann accidentally shot himself in the leg at a Los Angeles gun range on Saturday, according to a spokesperson for the filmmaker. The 83-year-old director suffered a superficial, subcutaneous wound and was treated at a local hospital before being released.

The incident occurred during target practice at The Range LA. A spokesperson for the Los Angeles Police Department said officers responded to a shots-fired report at approximately 4 p.m. and determined that the shooting was accidental. Mann’s representative said the injury occurred when a weapon discharged while holstered.

Mann, who has practiced shooting at ranges for decades, is known for directing crime films including Thief, Heat, The Insider, Collateral and Public Enemies. He received an Academy Award nomination for Best Director for The Insider, which was also nominated for Best Picture, and earned another Oscar nomination as a producer of The Aviator.

His most recent directing credit was 2023’s Ferrari. He is also preparing to shoot a sequel to Heat based on a novel he co-wrote with Meg Gardiner. The planned film is set to star Christian Bale, Leonardo DiCaprio and Stephen Graham. Mann co-created the television series Miami Vice and later directed its film adaptation.
