Starlog will publish its first new issue in 17 years on November 13, returning as an annual magazine focused on science fiction, fantasy and futurism. The publication’s final issue appeared in April 2009.
Launched in 1976, Starlog became known for news and interviews about geek culture, particularly coverage of Star Trek and Star Wars. Across its original run, it published 374 issues and more than 25,000 pages. The new issue will revisit some of the Star Wars rumors the magazine reported a year before the film’s release.
Annalee Newitz, a founding editor of io9, will lead the revived magazine as editor in chief. Alongside its film and television features, the publication plans to explore scientific and technological futures. Its opening story considers whether humans could grow crops on planets beyond Earth. The cover is by Gabriel Yeganyan.
The revival also includes a podcast hosted by journalist Jordan Hoffman and a weekly newsletter called Lodestar. Fangoria Holdings, which also owns Fangoria and Gorezone, is behind the project.
Newitz said the magazine aims to honor the original publication’s fan culture while examining possible futures through hopeful, scientifically grounded storytelling. Co-owner Tara Ansley said the return comes at a time when science fiction and the real world are increasingly difficult to distinguish, while questions about people and the future remain central.
